With so many subscription services available these days, Ubisoft could be about to add to the ever-growing list. As the XDefiant and Watch Dogs publisher works on launching the ambitious Assassin’s Creed Infinity, you might be wondering how the massive AC hub will function. Well, a new rumor claims that access to the new Assassin’s Creed experience will set you back a monthly subscription fee.
According to known Ubisoft leaker ‘xj0nathan’, the new PS5 game and new Xbox game (if you can even call Infinity a ‘game’ from what we know so far) will launch “with a monthly subscription” similar to PS Plus or Xbox Game Pass. With an active subscription, players can allegedly gain access to “all the old Assassin’s Creed games [….] future DLCs, [and] one exclusive skin/item per month etc.”
It isn’t the first time that microtransactions have been linked with Assassin’s Creed Infinity, either. Back in March, an Insider Gaming report claimed that AC Infinity would feature an item shop in the vein of Fortnite, where PS5 and Xbox players could purchase skins for either of Assassin’s Creed Red’s playable protagonists.
The biggest question for us though is that with a monthly subscription potentially on the cards, how does it factor into Ubi’s current service, Ubisoft+?
At present, Ubisoft+ is available on Xbox consoles, as well as offering a range of its best games to PlayStation owners through the Ubisoft Classics library. The service was an instrumental part of the Microsoft Activision merger, with “the next 15 years” of Activision-Blizzard titles set to be featured on Ubisoft+ through cloud streaming. It could even bring Call of Duty games to PS Plus, too.
The fact that Ubisoft is allegedly considering launching AC Infinity outside of Ubisoft+ is already a pretty telling sign. In an open letter from Ubisoft Quebec managing director Nathalie Bouchard, she expresses that “we profoundly believe this is an opportunity for one of Ubisoft’s most beloved franchises to evolve in a more integrated and collaborative manner that’s less centered on studios and more focused on talent and leadership, no matter where they are within Ubisoft.”
From the seemingly Ghost of Tsushima-style Assassin’s Creed Red, to the witchcraft of Assassin’s Creed Hexe, the next couple of years will mark a monumental shift forward for the franchise. Red is rumored to be the last of the sprawling RPG games that have led the series as of late, while Hexe is billed to be a return to smaller experiences. When the Assassin’s Creed Infinity release date arrives, both of these experiences will be brought together into the hub, for better or worse.
In other gaming news, Xbox’s recent studio turmoil casts doubt on Call of Duty heading to Game Pass, and EA is rounding a quarter of studios for the “largest Battlefield team” ever.
