Elden Ring fans, we’ve got good news and bad news. In a new interview, FromSoftware boss Hidetaka Miyazaki has confirmed that there won’t be another Elden Ring DLC after Shadow of the Erdtree drops – however, there’s a chance this won’t be the last time we venture through the Lands Between.
During an interview with Campfire Camp (translated from Chinese to English via Google), Miyazaki makes it explicitly clear that Shadow of the Erdtree “is the first and last DLC” coming to Elden Ring – bummer. After over two years of waiting, it’s pretty deflating to hear that we won’t be getting anything else out of one of the best games of all time. That being said, it makes perfect sense that this is the case considering how huge of an undertaking the upcoming expansion has clearly been for FromSoft.
With over ten challenging new boss fights on the cards, alongside a litany of new gear, skills, and weapons to find a master, Elden Ring Shadow of the Erdtree is, without a doubt, FromSoft’s biggest expansion ever. Speaking on its sheer scale to Campire Camp (nice spot by the way, GamesRadar), Miyazaki says that the decision to pursue one large DLC over separate, smaller ones was because of the open-world game’s own massive scale.
“Elden Ring emphasizes the exploration and adventure of the big world. In order to provide such an experience, a vast and huge scene is inevitably needed. Therefore, instead of splitting it into several parts, it is better to simply make one big [one]. If they were sold separately, the freedom of exploration and sense of adventure would be reduced.”
While Elden Ring’s looking to go out with an almighty bang, it’s not all doom and gloom moving forward. Miyazaki goes on to say that, even if this is the last we’ll see of Elden Ring for now, it’s not in FromSoft’s nature to lock away the IP’s future – three Dark Souls and six mainline Armored Core games can attest to that. That’s not to say ‘OMG Elden Ring 2 confirmed!!!’ but it at least indicates a sequential return to the Lands Between is a very real possibility.
Having set a new standard for the best Soulslike games, Elden Ring is undoubtedly FromSoft’s magnum opus – I’m sorry Bloodborne enjoyers, it is what it is. Shortly after it sailed past the 12 million sales mark in March 2022, Bandai Namco CEO Yasuo Miyakawa shared his dreams to expand the Elden Ring brand “beyond the game itself, and into everyone’s daily life.”
While FromSoft has since whipped away the Elden Ring trademark from the publisher, I can only hope the spirit of what Miyakawa had to say lives on – please give me Elden Ring 2 one day, Miyazaki, I’m on my knees.
