For some unknown reason, Final Fantasy XIV (FFXIV) has been experiencing almost non-stop DDOS attacks from an unknown attacker. This has been going on for at least a week already.
The critically acclaimed MMORPG FFXIV has been on the receiving end of non-stop DDOS attacks, with the latest one happening just today, May 12, 2024, at around 8:39 AM PDT. According to the official post on the Lodestone, the DDOS attack caused the following:
- Disconnection from Worlds
- Difficulty logging in to Worlds
- Difficulty accessing, sending, and receiving data from data centers
There's no news yet as to whether or not the server has recovered from the DDOS attack already.
This is the latest in a series of DDOS attacks that FFXIV has been experiencing the past week. The first DDOS attack happened back on May 6, 2024, with more happening on May 7, May 9, and May 10, 2024. These DDOS attacks did not only target the North American (NA) Data Centers but also Europe (EU), Japan (JP), and Oceania (OC).
Should you be an FFXIV player who was playing when the DDOS attacks, it would be a good idea to log out from the game and refrain from playing it first. The attacks normally subside after a few hours, with the servers recovering soon after.
What Could Be The Reason For The DDOS Attacks On FFXIV?
Although these DDOS attacks have been hitting FFXIV for over a week now, there is still no news as to what is the cause, of the attack, or who is responsible for them. Of course, various theories have been floating around online.
Any theories about the reasons DDOS attacks?

Some players are bringing up that it is likely that the service Square Enix is using to prevent DDOS attacks is currently under maintenance. As such, some people took advantage of it to DDOS attack the game.
Others are bringing up that some people are likely upset at Square Enix, especially due to the recent changes to its payment methods. This led them to DDOS attack the game in retaliation for the change.
Yet others are mentioning that it could just be that someone is testing the game's DDOS resilience, to the detriment of its players. This could either be the work of an outside group, or by Square Enix itself
In any case, most of these theories are just that: theories. Should more reliable information become available, we will be sure to let you know.
What Have The DDOS Attacks Affected In FFXIV?
Of course, the most obvious problem that the DDOS attacks have caused in FFXIV is the extreme lag that players started to experience. For example, raids would get stuck and not proceed with their mechanics. In some cases, players were even unable to see the enemy that they were fighting.
Players are also reporting that they are having problems logging in, thanks to either long queues, or the inability to connect to the FFXIV servers themselves.
Perhaps the funniest incident that this DDOS has caused, however, is with the game's fishing mains. One of the earlier DDOS attacks overlapped with the window to catch one of the game's rarer fishes: the Suiten Ippeki.
This fish has a very long wait in between catch windows (around a week or so), so some players were almost unable to catch the fish thanks to the DDOS attacks.
Of course, this is just a small sample of all of the players who were affected by the DDOS attacks.
We can only hope and pray that the DDOS attacks on FFXIV stop soon.
