Redemption arcs for maligned Xbox games aren’t uncommon, but Crime Boss Rockay City’s journey is one of the strangest yet. You might be shocked to learn that Crime Boss is actually worth trying these days, even if it’s just out of sheer curiosity. The good news is that it won’t set you back too much, as the Payday 3 rival is currently discounted in a recent Xbox sale – but not for long.
There’s a certain charm to Crime Boss Rockay City, calling back to the time of movie tie-in games and obscure licensed titles. But Ingame Studio’s heist FPS game (on the surface at least) isn’t based on any existing IP, despite its all-star cast. On Monday, May 13, 2024, the game’s current offer of $19.99/£17.49 will disappear, and for a price this low, Crime Boss is worth considering adding to your Xbox library – especially now it’s had an onslaught of updates.
Crime Boss has recently launched Update 8.0, which features a massive rework of the multiplayer game’s progression system, alongside a suite of quality-of-life tweaks for the game’s overhaul health. It’s a far cry from the game’s launch state, which felt half-baked, considering that Crime Boss actually has three core modes to cater for. Whereas rival heist experience Payday 3 is purely focused on the art of delivering “Hollywood heists”, Crime Boss features the following three game modes:
- Baker’s Battle: Play as Baker in the single player rogue-lite campaign as he builds his empire using strategy, cunning, and firepower to systematically steal territory from rival gangs
- Crime Time: Jump into the co-op action with your friends, play big heists, recruit your gang, earn money and respect
- Urban Legends: Experience high-stake missions, with the best characters & weapons that will take you places you’ve only dreamed of – and beyond
It’s a lot to navigate, but the latest update brings all these modes together progression-wise. “It doesn’t matter what mode you’re playing—the money you steal and jobs you complete all feed into a leveling system that allows you to unlock new weapons, equipment, and character skins,” says Epic Games in a recent statement about the game. The consistent care for post-launch content shows, and in our experience, we’ve found Crime Boss to be quite fun these days.
Seeing the Crime Boss Rockay City cast appear throughout the campaign is still so bizarre, in the best way of course. Experiencing Michael Madsen’s younger self attempts to forge his own empire in an ever-changing narrative would make for an entertaining Miami Vice episode.
It isn’t just us that are seeing what Crime Boss has to offer these days, either, as the game has cultivated a loyal player base on social media.
If all that sounds tempting to you, you can also add these Xbox deals to your cart too.
